Rankled Engineer Videos
On the eve of the Public Comment deadline (8/2/2021) for the soon-to-be released ASCE 7-22 – Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, The Rankled Engineer and Tim are sharing their responses to these proposed code updates.
There are many variants to the homebrew router planer, and this is mine.
Recommend using 2×2 steel angle (make sure there is at least one very flat/straight edge); 3/4″ wide aluminum bar to use as a wear strip; and your 3/4″ thick sheet material of choice to construct the rails.
Engineers, Contractors, Architects, Inspectors all have ethical limits to the statements and opinions they may offer to the media and general public.
In the immediate aftermath of structural failures we often find “experts” willing to share their opinion on what may have caused an event, but if the individual is not directly involved with the assessment of the impacted structure they are likely in violation of the ASCE Code of Ethics.
With the recent partial collapse of the Champlain Towers (south) in Miami we are seeing many professionals express their opinion on what happened, and this is not an appropriate thing for them to do.
My large Ash cabinet drawer front developed a bow so I re-built the drawer front. Check out the build.
Rankled Engineer Podcast (no10). Have building systems engineers become a commodity? Will engineers ever be appreciated? We are Rankled by how our jobs are often perceived by others. Are there any Disney Park Attractions you can’t ride because they make you sick in the tummy? We have a few (Tim only has 1). Swimming Pool + Bridge = Good Idea? We chat about some of the engineering challenges associated with this type of endeavor.

Short little anecdote for all you wood workers. To the uninitiated a rough sawn walnut board may not looked that great, but once it is surfaced, gorgeous.
Recently upgraded my planer to the DEWALT 735x. First order of business, building a new cart for house the planer. Of course we add flip-top-action.
Rankled Engineer Podcast (no9). Specs! Specifications! Oh, not those! There are a lot of ways to refer to an Owner’s Building Specifications. We take a dive into the world of specs.
Specifications are a large (boring) topic, and this discussion keeps to that tradition. If specs are not for you, please jump ahead to our fun discussion about Victoria’s new YouTube Channel: designSHING and Justin’s recap of a more successful PeeWee Flag Football (retrospective 2.0).

The Jr. Rankled Engineer has graduated from High School and is starting as a Junior in College!! He gets his first laptop; a AMD Ryzen 5 X13 Thinkpad.
The Rankled Engineer mills out a picture frame from 8/4 purple heart wood for this lovely Stitch Lithograph. 7 router profiling bits were required to mill out this ornate frame.
We dive into the relationship between the Building Code (IBC, CBC, FBC) and the Residential Code (IRC). Which has authority? when can you jump from one to the other?
Do you think speed limits are too low? too high? Perfect? We take a look at whom should be responsible for setting the speed limit on the roadways.

I sat down with my Dad (The Senior Rankled Engineer) to discuss our home Christmas Light Displays from back in the 90’s. We worked with primitive technology (tracer lights and time-delay relays).
